Null convention logic (NCL) is an asynchronous logic technology which enables robust, self timed, asynchronous circuit design. NCL combines the notion of time (the clock) with the value (logic) into one, three valued logic. Combined with a handshaking mechanism between registration stages, the clock is effectively eliminated. NCL produces circuits which intrinsically respond to manufacturing and environmental variations. NCL circuits are also able to scale voltage over a significant range without any extra circuitry. Our research will analyze the capabilities of NCL, and beyond, finding niche applications which are well suited to asynchronous logic design.
